How to Travel Around the World for Free
As we discussed previously, it only costs between $25-$32 USD per day to travel around the world for more than 6 months. That means a RTW trip can cost between $10,000-15,000 per year. In the US $15,000 is not a whole lot of money to make in a year’s worth of work. The only problem is how to create an income comparable to what someone can make at home while on the road.
Let’s see how someone could make that amount while traveling.
The first and easiest way is to work on a farm WWOOF‘ing. Wwoof stands for Willing Workers on Organic farms. You exchange a few hours of work a day helping with farm chores, and your room and board is taken care of. Some farms even incorporate a stipend to visitors. These farms usually expect a larger workload, and are less a vacation than a relaxed work exchange. Either way, it can be a great way to save some money and lower the savings necessary for a long trip. Or…
You can start building a website. Thanks to Google’s Adsense program you can generate an income writing about anything. Set up your own blog (you can get one for free on this website), and start writing interesting articles. If you get enough readers interested in your ideas and your travels, you can easily help pay for your travels and lower your costs by a bit. Hell, if you write well enough you can even make more money than it costs to travel. It really isn’t that hard.
With cheap internet access and computers in just about every country, it only makes sense for someone taking a long trip to do some sort of work on the internet while traveling. Even the laziest of travelers can generate a few dollars a day by doing a half hour’s worth of writing a day. It’s easy to do, and makes your traveling worthwhile as visitors start to comment on your work.
But how difficult would it be to pay for 100% of your travels working online?
Well, you’d need your own website, and you’d need to generate at least $30 per day. May even add $5 a day to that for insurance and savings. So $35 a day from the internet. Each time a person clicks on an Adsense link you make around $0.25. About 1%-5% of all pageviews (depending on the site) result in a click on a Google ad.
So for $35 dollars a day
$35 / $0.25 per click = 140 Clicks needed per day
140 / 2.5% of visitors click on link = 5,600 pageview per day
That means we need about 1,000 visitors a day, viewing an average of 5.6 pages each. That is not difficult to achieve. In my first week here at Traveling Forever I had 60,000 unique visitors. Because my site was new I only had 1.1 pages visited by a visitor. With a month’s worth of work a person who works smart can easily generate enough visitors to pay for a trip around the world.
