Living on the Road… Again

I’ve been on the road touring with the band Fake Problems for the past week. They’re a rowdy bunch of guys, and we’ve been having a great time. Here’s a few highlights from the trip so far:

Egging a Rival Band’s House - One of the band members went on a covert trip to egg a band’s house. I don’t think I’ve ever egged a house, and I didn’t know that people over the age of 14 still did that sort of thing.

Eating at IHOP - Fake Problems does not like to eat real food. Today is sunday, and I couldn’t go any longer watching these guys eat Wendy’s for breakfast lunch and dinner. Real food, real coffe, real conversation.

Skateboarding at SPOT - This was my favorite part of the trip, by far. I got to skate at the Skatepark of Tampa while the other guys played their show. SPOT is the best skatepark in the east, because the guys who run it are skaters themselves.

Watching Whiskey & Co. Play - These guys rocked us hard in Gainesville. The lead singer of the band, Kim, knows how to break a man down.

How to Get a Billion Pageviews

Over at Webmasterworld there’s an interesting article. The webmaster of plentyoffish.com is by far the biggest Adsense customer running their site alone. The guy has had months where he cleared a hundred thousand dollars in Adsense revenue. He submitted a guide to how he got his first billion pageviews.

The man is a genius.

Anyways, here are his tips:

I am without a doubt the top individual adsense publisher in terms of pageviews. Me talking about how I did it won’t help you, but here is what i found you need to be successful in adsense.

1. Get a database of IP’s so you know where your traffic is coming from. Then create channels for each country. Its not uncommon to see US traffic with a CPM of $5.00 and a CDN traffic at 20 cents and vice versa. If you have access to the hints option, give different hints based on IP. ie if your page is about 401k plans, that won’t get you anything outside of the USA.

2. You have to create sites that will bring in repeat traffic. If you think you will get rich off SEO think again. If you create a Free jobs site you could net 30 million + a year if you got big. Club listings site, free religious personals etc would all be big money makers. Look for established markets and offer a service for free and support it with adsense.

3. Have your users create content and lots of it. User reviews of night clubs, Resorts, golf courses etc. Build your site around your users and make them part of your site, don’t build your site for consumption.

4. Do not enter markets with a lot of competition monitized via adsense. Try and undercut paid content markets by offering a free service, or better yet create your own market.

5. Keep your site dead simple, it has to load fast and have no more then 2 ads and 1 or 2 pictures other then your logo. Do not confuse your user, give them what they want and give it to them fast.

6. Troll around various forums and if people are not talking about your market, there is a good chance you will make money.

I think every webmaster can apply these ideas with a pretty good degree of success. Even if you’ve got a content based site, add comments at every possible opportunity. Remember, pageviews are your bread and butter if you’re monetizing with Adsense. So every opportunity to create a dialog with your visitors should be taken. If you’ve got a community based site, throw a contest in the beginning to get your first few people. Advertise with Adsense or through another community to get the word out.

Community based sites seem like the way to go for people looking to generate the most revenue. Look at myspace, digg, deli.cio.us, etc. Having your users do all the hard work is the best way to be.

So, what are your ideas for creating massive traffic?
