The Easy Rule of Life

Are you bored?

Or does your work seem meaningless and much less than your capable of? If so, don’t blame your boredom on your job; blame it on a lack of knowledge.

You see, most people were never taught the fundamental tools to living a full life. Instead, they have to guess at it, and make a lot of mistakes along the way. In a way, we all have to do this regardless of how much we know, but there are a few laws of life everyone should know about. The most important one is the Easy Rule of Life. It’s the difference between a meaningful whole life, and one of boredom, tedium, and unsatisfaction.

So what is it, exactly?

Do the easy and comfortable, and life gets difficult.

Do the difficult and uncomfortable, and life gets easy.

Sounds pretty simple, huh?

Ninety percent of all people will consistently choose the first approach. They choose passive forms of entertainment (watching sports instead of playing, listening to music instead of creating), and employment, and wonder why they’re so bored with their lives.

It’s because choosing the easy and comfortable just creates an endless loop for ourselves. We get unsatisfied with where we are, look for the quickest way feel better, and then quickly get unsatisfied again. This is where drug addictions come from, and where self-destruction comes from in smart people. We waste a lot of time looking for something outside of ourselves to fill gaps in our lives, but it never works.

Now let’s take the person who does what’s difficult and uncomfortable.

They’re consistently looking for new ways to challenge themselves. Because choosing the more difficult route is a habit to them, they are able to build on each accomplishment, and steadily take on bigger challenges. Things that seem like enormous challenges for people who don’t do the difficult (starting a business, getting in shape) are taken in stride, and performed with relative ease.

Consider the Easy Rule of Life for someone who wants to get in shape.

The person taking the first route would reach for the diet of the week, and apply it until results are obtained. A person taking the second route would research and see what makes optimal health, then incorporate a diet, workout plan, and a personal challenge (like running a marathon). Two years later, the Easy Rule of life shows the first person is looking for another diet, and the second is winning their first marathon.

A simple idea, and it changes everything. You can read more about the Easy Rule of Life in a great book called The Joy of Not Working. It’s about finding the right balance between work and play in life. It’s full of life rules like the Easy Rule of Life, but there’s so much more. If you’re overworked, bored, retired, or unemployed, you need to check it out.
