Eating Healthy while Traveling PDF Print E-mail

If you're like me, you love to travel, but hate the idea of travel food. It's especially bad on road trips in the US, where sometimes the only thing to eat at stops are candy bars and sodas. That's why I've started packing out groceries and making my own meals while I'm on the road whenever possible. I use my own homemade cookstove, and can really cook some great meals anywhere I happen to be. That being said, here are my tips for eating while on the road.

  • Bring your own cooking equipment if you can. If I'm going on any trip longer than a couple of days, I bring along my homemade cooking gear. Bringing it forces me to use it, and that means homecooked meals.

  • If you're going in and out of a lot of gas stations, grab a power bar instead of that bag of chips. Cliff Bars are really great road food, and are found in most gas stations.

  • Fill up at the grocery before you leave. Get plenty of fresh veggies, and easy to prepare meals like Lipton Sides.

  • Lipton Sides are a great staple on the road. All you have to do is boil water and then throw it in. Easy.

  • Stay away from anything with Monosodium Glumate (MSG). When you're traveling you tend to eat less often, and eating a lot of MSG when you're hungry is the quickest way to get sick.

  • If the meat looks questionable, DON'T EAT IT. Order a vegetarian meal instead.
